Agricultural and Economic Development Strategy for Sierra Leone

The Republic of Sierra Leone is located on the west coast of Africa. It is bounded on the north west and north east by the Republic of Guinea, on the south east by the Republic of Liberia and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The country is comprised of three provinces; the Northern, Southern and Eastern Province and one other region called the Western Area. The provinces are divided into 12 districts, and the districts are further divided into chiefdoms, except for the Western Area.Sierra Leone is a region of lowland plains containing forests, bush and farmland that occupy about 43% of Sierra Leone’s land area. The west coast of Sierra Leone has some 400 kilometers (250 miles) of coastline, giving it bountiful marine resources.
The total land area is estimated at 72,000 Km. Land suitable for crop production on a sustainable basis is estimated at 5.36 million hectares; 4.3 million hectares of this total are uplands, shallow and highly leached with low fertility. An estimated 1.06 million hectares are fertile lowlands with considerable systems suitable for the production of a host of crops ranging from cereals to roots and tubers, fruits and vegetables, grain, legumes, cocoa, coffee, oil palm and fiber crops. The climate is tropical, with two seasons determining the agricultural cycle. The rainy season is from May to November and the dry season runs from December to May. The average temperature of 26C (79F) makes Sierra Leone a tropical paradise
